On-Site Acoustic Testing provides independent data center noise testing, vibration measurement and thermal investigations for owners, operators, design and commissioning teams, neighboring properties and municipalities. Field measurements support baseline surveys, equipment troubleshooting, community noise evaluations, commissioning and verification of corrective measures.
Documented data-center investigation
In a dispute involving operational noise from a data center, OSAT performed independent measurements at relevant property boundaries and reviewed the procedures behind opposing noise allegations. The review identified instrument suitability, calibration and measurement-method concerns. The principal legal action was subsequently withdrawn, while a narrower ordinance issue remained open at the time of the case study.

How OSAT Approaches Data Center Field Testing
Data center investigations are scoped around the operating condition and decision the measurements need to support. That may mean documenting a commissioning baseline, isolating a complaint source, comparing equipment configurations, evaluating a neighboring-property impact, or verifying that mitigation produced the intended result.
Because operating load and equipment sequencing can materially change the acoustic and vibration environment, OSAT documents the relevant plant configuration, measurement locations, time period, and operating state during testing. Where necessary, measurements are repeated under different loads or equipment combinations to separate individual contributors.
Data center noise testing
Data centers can generate substantial and highly tonal sound from cooling equipment, generators, transformers, rooftop systems, air handlers, fans, pumps, and other mechanical infrastructure. OSAT performs field measurements to document both facility performance and off-site impact.
- Property-line and community noise surveys
- Daytime and nighttime environmental noise measurements
- Octave-band and one-third-octave-band analysis
- Tonal and low-frequency noise investigation
- Source localization and contribution analysis

For data center owners, operators, and design teams
Testing can be performed during design validation, commissioning, routine operation, expansion, troubleshooting, or post-mitigation verification. The field program can be limited to a specific system or expanded to characterize the overall acoustic, vibration, and thermal condition of the facility.
Field testing can identify which systems actually control the acoustic environment after construction and during operation. Measurements can be used to verify design assumptions, investigate complaints, establish baseline conditions, evaluate mitigation measures, and support commissioning or expansion projects.
- Mechanical and electrical equipment noise
- Cooling-system and chiller performance
- Generator and emergency-system noise
- Rooftop and exterior plant measurements
- Interior equipment-room and occupied-space noise
- Vibration transmission through slabs, structures, piping, and equipment supports
- Operational comparisons under different loads and equipment configurations
Vibration testing
OSAT can measure vibration associated with rotating equipment, cooling systems, generators, pumps, structural transmission paths, and other data center infrastructure. Testing can help distinguish airborne-noise problems from structure-borne vibration and identify dominant transmission paths.
- Equipment and structural vibration measurements
- Frequency-domain analysis
- Source and transmission-path investigation
- Baseline and comparative measurements
- Verification following isolation or mitigation work
Thermal imaging and temperature investigation
Thermal imaging can be used alongside acoustic and vibration measurements to document temperature patterns and help investigate mechanical, airflow, enclosure, and equipment conditions. OSAT can provide FLIR-based thermal imaging and field temperature measurements where they are useful to the project scope.
- Thermal imaging of equipment and building systems
- Surface-temperature mapping
- Identification of anomalous hot or cold areas
- Comparative measurements under operating conditions
- Documentation for troubleshooting and commissioning support
Community and neighboring-property investigations
For residents, property owners, HOAs, municipalities, and other parties affected by data center operations, independent measurements can establish what sound is present, when it occurs, its frequency content, and how it compares with applicable criteria or baseline conditions.
- Residential and property-line measurements
- Nighttime and low-background-noise conditions
- Low-frequency hum and tonal-noise investigation
- Long-term monitoring to document operating cycles
- Independent documentation for planning, disputes, or mitigation review
Troubleshooting and Mitigation Verification
When a problem is not explained by a single obvious source, OSAT can compare locations, operating states, frequency signatures, vibration response, and equipment sequencing to narrow the dominant contributor. This is particularly useful where several similar fans, chillers, transformers, generators, or rooftop systems operate together and where low-frequency or tonal components dominate the complaint.
Following corrective work, the same or comparable test positions and operating conditions can be measured again to quantify the change. This provides an objective basis for determining whether a modification, barrier, enclosure, isolator, control change, or other mitigation measure actually improved the field condition.
What Clients Receive
Depending on the scope, deliverables can include measured sound and vibration levels, frequency spectra, time histories, test and monitoring locations, operating conditions, equipment states, photographs, thermal images, comparison with project criteria or baseline conditions, source and transmission-path findings, and before-and-after verification results.
Independent field verification
OSAT is an independent testing company. We do not sell data center equipment, acoustic products, vibration isolators, or mitigation systems. Our role is to measure actual field conditions, identify dominant sources and transmission paths, and provide clear technical documentation.
